Russian spy detained in Warsaw

Arrest of Polish civil servant caught passing information to Russian intelligence

The Polish security agency, ABW, detained the man on March 23. The official in question is said to have "maintained contact with Russian intelligence operatives working under diplomatic cover in the embassy in Warsaw." the ABW had been working together with other agencies from other EU countries.

The civil servant in question was allegedly sharing information about the Polish government’s strategy as regards the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The planned pipeline is to run between Russia and Germany under the Baltic Sea and has been criticised by Poland. The country considers that an increased capacity of Russian gas transit to Germany coming via that underwater route rather than via the existing pipeline through Poland, would be against Poland’s interests.

The man has been arrested initially for 3 months pending trial and faces 10 years in prison if found guilty.
