Bartosz Kurek was named the best volleyball player in Europe in 2018 during an event in Budapest on Friday.

The 31-year-old Kurek won gold at the world championships in Italy and Bulgaria this year and was also nominated the most valuable player (MVP) of the tournament.
The KPS Stocznia Szczecin athlete is the first male Pole honored with the title of volleyball player of the year by the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV). In the past, two Polish women received the award: Małgorzata Glinka-Mogentale in 2003 and Dorota Świeniewicz in 2005.
Among the women this year’s title went to Serbian Tijana Bošković.
The awards were granted by the CEV during the gala in the Hungarian capital.
The coach of the year was the Belgian coach of the Polish team Vital Heynen.
Kurek and Bošković were not present at the gala in Budapest.
