Polish athletes recognised by sports journalists

Kamil Stoch was voted the seventh Best Male Athlete, while the Polish men’s volleyball team took fourth place in the Best Team category in the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) poll for the best athletes of 2018.

Kamil Stoch was the highest ranked winter sports athlete in the poll. He grabbed 6.34 percent of votes, ahead of individuals like the alpine skier Marcel Hirscher, the NBA star LeBron James and the seven-time winner of the biathlon World Cup Martin Fourcade.

Poland’s national volleyball team was the highest ranked non-football team, finishing behind the French and Croatian national teams, and the Spanish club Real Madrid.

A panel of 359 journalists from 87 countries voted in the following categories: Best Male Athlete, Best Female Athlete, Best Team and Best Press Facility of 2018.

Croatia and Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric was voted the AIPS Best Male Athlete of 2018. The award for Best Female Athlete went to US gymnast Simone Biles.

The French Men’s Football Team was voted the Best Team of 2018, while the award for the Best Press Facility went to the facilities and personnel of the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 (the French football team won that tournament), which was watched by more than a half of the world’s population between June 14 and July 15.

In 2018, the Polish national volleyball team defended their title of World Champions from 2014, beating Brazil 3:0 in the final. Kamil Stoch won the ski jumping World Cup, gold medal in a large hill individual event and bronze in a large hill team competition during the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. In the 67th Four Hills Tournament he won all the events (only the second athlete in history to achieve this). He also won the prestigious Raw Air, Willingen Five and Planica 7 tournaments.

The International Sports Press Association was founded during the 8th Olympic Games in Paris in 1924.
