Two Polish players pass Australian Open qualifications

Iga Świątek and Kamil Majchrzak managed to pass qualification phase of tennis Grand Slam tournament Australian Open that commences on Monday.

Polish player Alicja Rosolska, along with Eri Hozumi of Japan, made it to the women doubles final of WTA tennis tournament in Sydney, Australia.

Both players will make their debuts in Grand Slam main tournament. Last year, 17-year-old Świątek, who is currently in the 178th position in the WTA ranking, won the junior edition of Wimbledon.

On her way to the main phase of Australian Open, she defeated Serbian player Olga Danilović (109th in ranking), Aliona Bolsova Zadoinov of Spain (170th in the ranking) and Danielle Lao of the US (168th in ranking). In the first round, Świątek will face Ana Bogdan of Romania.

23-year-old Majchrzak, placed in 176th position in ATP ranking, managed to beat Brayden Schnur of Canada (155th in ranking), Noah Rubin of the US (141th position) and German player Mats Moraing (150th place in ranking). His first competitor in main tournament will be Kei Nishikori of Japan, seeded number eight.

Another Polish player, Magdalena Fręch, was knocked out in the first phase of qualifications.

Apart from Świątek and Majchrzak, two other Polish players will take part in the main singles competitions of Australian Open. Magda Linette will face tournament’s number four, Naomi Osaka from Japan, while the competitor of Hubert Hurkacz will be Ivo Karlović of Croatia.
