A Penguin named… ‘Pierogi’

A new baby blue penguin at a zoo in the midwestern state of Ohio officially has a name.

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden asked its Facebook and Instagram followers to suggest and vote on names for the little blue penguin that hatched on New Year’s Eve.

“Pierogi” was the name voted the highest by the facebookers and instagrammers.

The word 'pierogi' is the plural form of the Polish word 'pieróg'. Pierogi are filled dumplings of Central European origin, made by wrapping unleavened dough around a savory or sweet filling and cooking in boiling water, or pan-frying.

The second-place name was “Toast”. This name was liked by the bird team at the zoo so much that it was given to the second chick that hatched on December 28.

“We usually follow a theme when choosing names for certain species, and the little blue penguin theme is food and drink,” Cincinnati Zoo’s associate curator was quoted as saying by the zoo’s website.

“Since the chick being named was born on New Year’s Eve, we got a lot of suggestions like Champagne, Dom, Bubbly, etc... We really liked Toast.”

The little blue penguin is the smallest species of penguin.
