Paweł Adamowicz, the mayor of the coastal city of Gdańsk, northern Poland, has been stabbed with a knife during the local finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity on Sunday.
According to the Onet.pl website, Mr Adamowicz was resuscitated and then, taken to hospital.
The 27-year-old attacker has been detained. Paweł Adamowicz is in a critical condition and is undergoing an operation in a Gdańsk hospital. No one, besides him, was hurt.
A man who called himself “Stefan” ran onto the stage and stabbed Mr Adamowicz several times.
The attacker started to shout that he was wrongly imprisoned when the Civic Platform party was ruling, and that is why “Adamowicz died.” According to gazeta.pl website, the assaulter has a criminal record.
The police have removed people from the place of the assault. Other services are also present on the site.
Several politicians manifested their support on social media. President Andrzej Duda wrote on his Twitter account: "Although we usually differ with Mr Paweł Adamowicz in views, [...] today, I pray for his quick recovery.”
