Łukasz Żal received the award of the American Society of Cinematographers for the cinematography of the “Cold War” movie.
Mr Żal is the first Pole to receive this award. He went up against other cinematographers such as Linus Sandgren (“Roma”), Matthew Libatique (“A star is born”), as well as Yorgos Lanthimos (“The Favourite”).
The cinematographer of “Cold War” has a chance to receive further awards in the near future. He was nominated for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards and for the Oscars.
“Cold War” was nominated for the Academy Awards in three categories: Best Foreign Movie, Best Cinematography (Łukasz Żal) and Best Director (Paweł Pawlikowski). The Oscars award ceremony will take place on February 24 in Hollywood.
The Polish movie also has a chance to win four BAFTA awards. It was nominated in the same categories as for the Oscars, as well as for Best Screenplay (Janusz Głowacki, Paweł Pawlikowski). These awards will be presented on Sunday evening at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Mr Żal is a laureate of many awards for cinematographers, including Gold and Silver Frog of the International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography Camerimage, which he won in 2013 and 2018 respectively.
