An illegal cigarette factory near Łódź in central Poland was seized by law enforcement agencies along with 1.5 tons of tobacco without excise duty and 360,000 cigarettes, a spokesperson for Poland’s Chamber of Fiscal Administration (IAS) said, adding that the state treasury could have lost PLN 20 million (EUR 4.65m).
Six suspects were detained and if found guilty, could face up to five years in prison besides fines, the representative reported.
“The suspects made an unsuccessful attempt to escape but were arrested after a short chase,” spokesperson was quoted as saying by Polish news agency, PAP.
The factory might have been churning out up to 400,000 cigarettes a day, according to a spokesperson for Poland’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBŚP).
The Customs and Tax Office in Łódź is investigating the case.
