Poland’s national football team will face Austria in Vienna on Thursday evening in the first game of the qualifications for UEFA Euro 2020.
Poland is in group G with Austria, Israel, Slovenia, Northern Macedonia and Latvia.
Although Poland was drawn from the first pot, in the opinion of many experts, Austria will the favourite in Thursday’s clash. Poland’s weak performance in the UEFA Nations League raised many doubts about the team’s performance.
On the plus side, manager Jerzy Brzęczek will be spoilt for choice with three successful strikers in good form: Robert Lewandowski of FC Bayern Munich, Arkadiusz Milik of SSC Napoli and Krzysztof Piątek, representing AC Milan. According to unofficial reports, Milik and Lewandowski will create a pair of forwards, while Piątek will start on the bench.
The manager announced that he made the decision concerning the position of goalkeeper in the upcoming matches. Wojciech Szczęsny from Juventus FC will be the first choice of Mr Brzęczek. “He is the choice for the first half of the year,” the manager declared.
The Austrian team will face Poland without some of their first team players. Guido Burgstaller from Schalke 04, Michael Gregoritsch of FC Augsburg, as well as Hannes Wolf of Red Bull Salzburg, cannot take part in the Thursday’s game because of injuries.
Organisers estimate that around 40,000 people will attend the match at Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna. Many of them will be Poles, who will be present not only in the sector for away team fans but in other parts of the arena as well.
Kick-off is at 8.45 pm CET.
