Muggles compete in European Quidditch Cup in Warsaw

Over 300 players with broomsticks will descend onto the Bemowo district of Warsaw to compete in the 7th European Quidditch Cup this weekend.

Sixteen teams from Poland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom will play to advance to the next round of the championships, where they will face off with winners of the Division 2 tournament, which will take place in May, in Belgium.

The game of quidditch was inspired by the fictional sport described in the “Harry Potter” novels. It was developed in 2005 at Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont, USA. Since then the sport has grown from North American college championships to include teams on all continents.

The first European Quidditch Cup was held in Lesparre-Médoc, France, in 2012.
