It was the first senior WTA final for the 17-year-old Świątek, after she defeated Kristyna Pliskova in the semifinal on Saturday.

In the final, played on a cold and rainy Sunday, she faced Polona Hercog who is 10 years her senior. The match was interrupted due to rain in the middle of the first set, at 3:2 for Hercog. When the match recommenced after an hours break, the Slovenian player kept the upper hand and won the first set comfortably.

Świątek did not improve her performance until half-through the second set. She made many unforced errors, lacked coolness and composure. Finally, at 2:3 , Świątek won four consecutive games, breaking Hecog twice. It was a very good display from Świątek, who won the set 6:3.

The 17-year-old’s winning streak continued in the third set. She broke Hercog once again, and gained a 2:0 advantage. However, at that point the Slovenian player gained the initiative. She broke Świątek twice and gained a 4:2 lead, which she did not squander until the end of the set. Hercog won the match 6:3 3:6 6:3. Despite the defeat, Świątek can be happy with her first senior final, which gave her new experience and lessons to learn from. Moreover, on Monday she will debut in the WTA Top 100, ranked 88th.

She is also now sure of qualifying for the French Open in May. It will be the second senior Grand Slam Tournament for Świątek, who entered the senior competition this year. In January, after going through qualifications, she was defeated in the second round of the Australian Open.

Last year, Iga Świątek won the Junior Wimbledon Championships and the French Open doubles.
