May 5, 2019 marks the 200th anniversary of the birthday of the outstanding Polish composer Stanisław Moniuszko. On this occasion, the Polish presidential couple decided to initiate a nationwide campaign “National Playing”, aimed at popularising Polish music and strengthening the national identity.
Musicians, bands and orchestras representing various genres and music styles will perform at the six-hour concert "Wiwat Moniuszko!" in the courtyard of the Presidential Palace, starting on May 5 at 12:00.
The programme includes, among others, mazurkas and dances from the operas written by Mr Moniuszko: “Straszny Dwór”, “Halka”, and his last work, “Paria”.
Presentations and lessons in traditional Polish dances are also planned. President Andrzej Duda emphasised the “unique” significance of Stanisław Moniuszko's work in the history of the national community.
"I wholeheartedly invite all of you to celebrate the birthday anniversary of this outstanding composer. I hope that the various cultural, educational and scientific initiatives that will be carried out on the day will create an image of great attachment of Poles to the works of their great compatriot,” President Duda stated.
