Football: Polish goalie chosen West Ham’s player of the year

As his debut season in West Ham United comes to an end, Łukasz Fabiański was elected the “Hammer of the Year” (Hammers is a nickname for West Ham) by fans of the British club.

The Polish goalkeeper also won the “Best Signing of the Season” and the “Save of the Season” categories. A total of 13 accolades were presented on Wednesday, at the club’s official Awards Gala concluding the 2018/2019 season.

“I’m very happy obviously, and very grateful for all the fans who voted for me. It’s something special, especially in my first season here, so I really appreciate all the support,” he said.

In the 62-year history of the awards, Fabiański became only the sixth goalkeeper to win the “Hammer of the Year” title.

No Premier League goalie has made more saves than Fabianski this season. Bought for GBP 7 mln from Swansea in the summer of 2018, he has started all 37 league games, with only one game to go.
