In her debut in the senior French Open, Iga Świątek defeated Qiang Wang from China and advanced to the 3rd round of the tournament.
The Polish player, who celebrates her 18th birthday on Friday, needed 54 minutes to send China’s highest ranked player home. Świątek won 6:3 6:0.
Świątek, who was crowned the Junior French Open champion last year, proved she feels comfortable on the Paris clay. She broke Wang five times, with the second set lasting just 25 minutes.
In the next round, she will face either Daria Kasatkina from Russia or Monica Puig from Puerto Rico.
This is her debut in the tournament's senior competition. Earlier this year, she reached the second round of the Australian Open but was defeated 2:6 0:6 by Camila Giorgi.
Later on Thursday, another Polish player, Magda Linette, will face the world’s number three, Simona Halep in the second round.
