It is the end of this year’s French Open for Iga Świątek after she lost 1:6 0:6 to the title defender, the current world number 3, Romanian Simona Halep in the fourth round.
From the opening minutes, Świątek could not find a way to get past her powerful opponent. The scoreboard showed 5:0 in just 16 minutes. Świątek started playing better in the closing stages of the set and broke Halep after some good attacking play. It was too little too late, though, and Świątek lost the set 6:1 after 24 minutes of play.
The second set repeated the scenario of the first one, as Halep broke Świątek twice and gained a 4:0 advantage. Though the players were dressed in the exact same kits, the difference in quality was evident. Halep produced a nearly flawless performance and Świątek could not find an answer to the accurately placed balls. Her own attacks often landed outside the court. Throughout the match, the Polish player committed 19 unforced errors compared to just five of her opponent.
The match ended in just 45 minutes. Świątek lost 1:6, 0:6.
The 18-year-old Pole debuts in the senior competition this season. For the last year’s winner of the Junior French Open, reaching the 4th round of the senior tournament would no doubt be considered a success. However, a defeat to the world’s number 3 after winning just one game in the match is a lesson of how much there is still to learn.
After reaching the fourth round Świątek will advance 40 positions in the WTA ranking, to 63rd place.
