Poland awarded gold medal in European Athletics Championship

Poland’s team won the gold medal in the European Athletics Team Championship with 345 points in Bydgoszcz, northern Poland, on Sunday.

Polish athletes have won the gold medal in the European Athletics Team Championship for the first time. Scoring 345 points, the Polish team outran the silver medal winner, Germany, by nearly 30 points.

Poland’s Sport Minister, Witold Bańka, said that the score “confirms that we are champions in athletics... This is the first time Poland has won the European Athletics Team Championships. Spectacular. We won the European Cup in Brema, but the European Team Championships never.”

Until this year, only the Russian and German team had won the team championships. This year Polish athletes won scoring 10 individual victories during the contest of 40 different competitions.

The triumph was observed at the stadium in Bydgoszcz on Sunday by over 16,000 fans, which is a record number during athletic events.

Poland’s President Andrzej Duda congratulated the team in a tweet posted on Sunday evening. “Another success of Polish sportsmen!”
