The Polish government estimates that the losses caused by the drought by the end of July stood at PLN 1.1 billion (EUR 250 million).see more
Mr Ardanowski said that he applied for the aid last week. However, he indicated that “EU mills grind slowly,” and that farmers should not expect the EU aid to be very high. During the summer, other EU members, such as France, have also applied for the subsidies to help farmers cope with the dry weather.
Mr Ardanowski added that a separate government's programme aiding farmers in water tanks and irrigation infrastructure construction will launch in September. The programme’s budget is to amount to EUR 100 mln.
According to the Agriculture Minister, this year's drought losses will further increase as more dry weather is expected.
