21-year-old Hubert Hurkacz faced French player Benoit Paire in the final of the competition in Winston-Salem, the US. The first set was equal at its beginning, but when Polish player gained advantage 3:1, he was able to control it to the end. After 36 minutes, he won 6:3.

In the second part, Pole was leading at first, but lost a focus and allowed his rival to lead 3:2. The French player started to play better and was able to win the second set 6:3.

After two sets, it started raining, but players were allowed to play. The third set had been stopped several times due to the rain.

Pole won the breakpoint in the sixth game of the third set, gained advantage 4:2, then won another game. Then another intermission caused by the rain occurred, but finally, after two hours of the competition, Hurkacz won the game.

“I am so glad that I have been able to win an ATP Tour event,” said Hurkacz. “I hope many more guys will join me soon and that I will win some more. It means a lot to me and I am glad that I won this tournament here,” he stressed.

His success is the first victory of a Polish tennis player in men’s tournament of such high rank since 1982 when Wojciech Fibak won the competition in Chicago.

Kubot wins for the 25th time

In the same tournament, but in the doubles competition, Łukasz Kubot, along with his partner from Brazil, Marcelo Melo also made it to the final.

Their competitors were the American couple Nicholas Monroe and Tennys Sandgren. Just like in the singles final, the rain interfered the match. The Pole and Brazilian player lost the first set 6:7 (6-8), then in the second part won 6:1 and 10:3 in the super tie-break, which is played in doubles matches instead of the third set.

“I think the level was very high today,” Kubot said. “We used our chances. We had a great four matches here.”

“We played very good since the first match. We are of course very happy with the title. We were looking for this title during the year, and we missed a couple opportunities along the way. But we are so happy to play as we played this tournament,” Melo said.

It was the 25th doubles victory of Kubot in his career, but the first this season.

First WTA victory of Linette

Magda Linette won the WTA Tour tournament in New York, the US, after defeating Italian player Camila Giorgi. It was her first WTA Tour victory in her career.

The first part of the match was close until the result of 5:5. Then in the last two games, Polish player did not win any point, so Giorgi won the first set 7:5.

The beginning of the second set was dominated by Linette, but Italian player managed to catch up. Again there was the result of 5:5, but this time the Polish player was victorious.

In the third part it was Linette who had to chase her rival, but she succeeded. She was losing 2:4, but finally won 6:4 and the whole match.

“I am 27, so it’s not super young. So it means really a lot. It gives a lot of boost - you know, for the confidence, and also a reward. Finally, it’s a reward for us, for all the hard work,” Linette said after the victory.
