Before the clash with the “Squadra Azzurra,” the Poles lost only one game in the World Cup – on Friday against the US. The Italian team began the competition with two losses, then they went on to beat Argentina and Tunisia.

In the first set, the Poles quickly gained advantage and controlled the events on the court. The captain of the team, Bartosz Kurek, was successful with his attacks, and the Italian team had trouble with receiving the serves of Cuban-born Wilfredo Leon. Poland never lost the lead and ultimately won 25:18.

The second part of the game was also well controlled by the Polish team. Again, Italy struggled with Leon’s serves and the Poles were effective with their block. Similarly, like in the first set, the Poles quickly went into the lead and retained it until the end of the set, which concluded with the same result as the first one.

The third set started with Italy leading, but two serve aces from Leon and generally good performance allowed Poles to gain the lead 5:4. This part was much more competitive, but Poland was able to win thanks to good substitutions. The end phase of the set was a head-to-head duel between the two teams, but it was Poland that managed to win it and the whole match.

“We played a very good match today. We made a few mistakes. We kept good concentration. I am surprised we can do this after a long season. Congratulations to my players,” Vital Heynen, the coach of the Polish team, said after the match.

“I am proud of our guys. I like the way we reacted and put pressure on Italy. Italy played a good match and I am sure they will do better later in the tournament. We did a good job and it was good collective work. We hope to continue this in Hiroshima,” Bartosz Kurek added.

The Polish team will play its next game on Wednesday. The rival will be Russia. After five games, Poland is in third place in the table of the FIVB World Cup.
