Polish fighter Dominik Dziuda became the world champion in karate in the junior category.
The 11th World Karate Championships are being held in Santiago, the capital of Chile.
Some 31 young Polish men and women compete in the Championships.
The country is currently engulfed in violent protests, which have left 18 people dead so far.
“The situation in Santiago is tense, however, we decided to stay and fight for the medals for Poland,” said Paweł Połtorzecki, the head of Polish Karate Union.
These include both people shot by the military and people who have died in fires started by the looters.
“If I notice that the situation may be dangerous to our athletes, we will transport them to a safe place immediately,” Mr Połtorzecki added.
