Young Polish tennis player Iga Świątek has been nominated for WTA Newcomer of the Year 2019.
Świątek was nominated alongside Coco Gauff of the US, Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic, Bianca Andreescu of Canada and Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine.
This year, the young Polish female player reached her highest position in the WTA Ranking. In August, she reached 49th place.
In April, she managed to get to her first WTA tournament final but was defeated by Slovenian Polona Hercog.
Over the course of the season, Świątek earned USD 633,807. It was the 65th highest amount of all players on the WTA Tour and second among Poles. Fellow female Polish player, Magda Linette won USD 644,465. The highest earner was Australian player Ashleigh Barty who earned USD 11,307,587.
Among the men, Rafael Nadal of Spain leads the way, amassing USD 16,349,586. The highest-ranked Polish player, Hubert Hurkacz, was placed in 43rd position, with USD 1,228,731.
In 2006, Poland’s Agnieszka Radwańska was chosen as WTA Newcomer of the Year.
