Consumer prices will rise in the first quarter of 2020, but unless there is another drought, food inflation should not be as steep as last year, economist Przemysław Kwiecień of XTB tells PolandIN.

After last year’s price shocks at the shops, when the price of some vegetables, like the lowly parsnip, made headlines in Poland, any rises in the prices of food expected from June onwards will not be as steep as last year, according to Mr Kwiecień, Chief Economist of XTB.

The rise in the minimum wage by nearly 16 percent in 2020 will be passed on to consumers, Łukasz Kozłowski of the Polish Federation of Entrepreneurs said. Though he was a proponent of raising the rates that an estimated 3.5 percent of Poles receive on the bottom rung of the job ladder, he believes the large hike will not be greeted favourably by employers.
