The Israeli who works in Warsaw says that the Polish President Andrzej Duda was right not to go once he was excluded from the list of speakers at the World Holocaust Forum in Jerusalem. He thinks that the Yad Vashem institute has succumbed to pressure from Mosher Kantor, the Russian oligarch and friend of President Putin in snubbing Poland.
Jonny Daniels thinks that as a result Yad Vashem has missed an opportunity to focus on the Holocaust in Europe, the continent which is again seeing a rise in anti-semitism. He suspects that the Jerusalem event will deflect from the 27 January commemoration at the site of the Auschwitz German Nazi death camp and that this represents an own goal for Israel.
Mr Daniels also fears that Valdimir Putin will once again use the event to attack Poland and repeat his narrative of history. If that is the case then the event will be eclipsed by Mr Putin’s remarks.
Finally, the Israeli activist praised the role played by President Andrzej Duda. He said that the President’s measured and statesmanlike response had been noticed and praised by the foreign media corps in Warsaw.
