Volleyball: Poland two steps away from Olympic Games

The Polish women’s national volleyball team won against Azerbaijan 3:0 in the 2020 Women's European Olympic Qualification Tournament held in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, and advanced to the knockout stage.

Poland started the tournament promisingly, as they achieved two 3:1 victories, first against Bulgaria, then over the Netherlands, a team by many considered a favourite of the competition. Regardless of the result of the last game, they were guaranteed to play in the decisive, knockout phase.

To secure first place, Poland needed a two sets win against Azerbaijan. After achieving that with relative ease, coach Jacek Nawrocki sent a few less experienced players onto the floor, who sealed another convincing win for the Polish team.

On Saturday, Poland will face another higher ranked team, Turkey, in the semifinals. Should they win, they will face either the hosts or Germany in the grand final one day later. Only the victor of Sunday’s match will secure the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games spot.

Poland - Azerbaijan 3:0 (25:19, 25:19, 25:23). Most points for the Polish team: Martyna Łukasik 12, Agnieszka Kąkolewska 11.
