Teach kids ‘the educational uses of smartphones’: expert

Left to themselves, kids are “good at playing games and watching videos on youtube”, but they need to be taught “how to search for information and evaluate its importance,” Prof Piotr Stankiewicz Director of Poland’s Educational Research Institute (IBE) told PolandIN.

The institute is launching a series of debates and studies aimed at raising the awareness of the potential for learning online in schools, while also alerting parents and teachers to not be misled by the image of digital natives - the idea that if kids grow up with mobile phones, they know how to get the most out of them.

According to the institute’s website, some 60 percent of schools ban the use of smartphones outright on school grounds. In Prof. Stankiewicz’s opinion, this is “throwing the baby out with the bathwater,” as children are “carrying very powerful didactic tools around in their pockets” and don’t know how to use them.
