Having defeated Donna Vekić of Croatia (7-5, 6-3), Iga Świątek of Poland advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne on Saturday.
Świątek, who is ranked 56th in the WTA rankings, was not expected to win over Vekić, ranked 20th in the WTA. Nevertheless, Świątek held her own and was gaining points with serve. Eventually, she won 7-5, 6-3.
For the second time in her career, the 18-year old tennis player from Warsaw, Poland will play in the quarter finals of a Grand Slam tournament (Australian Open, French Open, US Open, and Wimbledon). Last year she reached this stage in the French Open.
So far in Melbourne, Iga Świątek has not lost a set. In previous rounds she defeated Hungarian Timea Babos and Carla Suarez Navarro from Spain.
In her next match, Świątek will face 28th seeded Anett Kontaveit of Estonia. She will also play doubles with Poland’s Łukasz Kubot against Australia’s Ellen Perez and Luke Saville.
