Jan-Krzysztof Duda defeated the world champion and the world ranking leader Magnus Carlsen in the seventh round of the second edition of the Lindores Abbey Rapid Challenge, a prestigious online chess tournament organised by the Norwegian grandmaster, considered the best player of the current generation.
This is the first victory of the 22-year-old grandmaster, who obtained this title at the age of just 15, over Carlsen. The duel ended after 43 moves.
The Pole began his Wednesday rivalry with a white victory against the Russian Daniil Dubov, the world champion in rapid chess from 2018.
Later on, playing blacks, the Polish representative lost to the Iranian Alireza Firouzja. On Wednesday, Duda meets in the eighth round with Armenia's Levon Aronian.
12 leading world grandmasters are participating in the tournament. After seven rounds, the Pole, the world’s number 12, has gathered 3 points and currently ranks 10th.
