The original date of the match was May 27, but due to the pandemic of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and the suspension of all football competitions in Poland and nearly all in Europe, it had to be postponed.
Zbigniew Boniek, the head of the Polish Football Association (PZPN), hopes that the Polish city will remain the host of the final.
“For sure we can keep it in Gdańsk. I know a lot on the matter, but cannot reveal, because it is unofficial. If the match is held in Gdańsk, we want to organise it with fans, because football on such a level has to be for them. But in other circumstances, we will try to find alternative solutions,” Mr Boniek told Polish public broadcaster TVP.
Football in Europe is returning, league competitions in several countries, including Poland, have been restored, major leagues such as Spanish La Liga or English Premier League set dates of return. On the other hand, some leagues were cancelled, including French Ligue 1 or Dutch Eredivisie. From June 19, fans will be allowed to watch games live at Polish stadiums, with a limit of up to 25 percent of arenas’ capacities.
The European Competitions (UEFA Champions League and Europa League) were not restored yet, and no official schedule was announced. One of the scenarios includes start on August 6, when two matches of the last 16 could be held, then quarter-finals on August 10 and 13, semi-finals on August 17 and 20, and the final on August 26 or 27 in Gdańsk.
On Tuesday, the head of PZPN also broke the news about the venue of the final of the Polish Cup. For the first time since season 2013/2014, it will not be held at PGE Narodowy stadium in Warsaw. The final match will take place on July 24, 2020, at Arena Lublin in Lublin, eastern Poland.
