Racing cyclists fight for their lives following serious accident

Female racing cyclists Rita Malinkiewicz and Katarzyna Konwa were involved in a serious accident on Monday in the vicinity of the southern Polish town of Bielsko-Biała and now; in desperate need for blood transfusion, they are fighting for their lives.

The cyclists were riding down the road as part of their training when an oncoming car driven by a 58-year-old woman veered, for unknown reasons, onto their lane. The heavily injured cyclists were transported to hospitals in Sosnowiec and Bielsko-Biała.

According to local media, Ms Malinkiewicz suffered life-threatening injuries. Ms Konwa is in a pharmacological coma and awaits spine surgery. Her condition is serious but stable.

A blood collection was organised on Thursday to aid the sportswomen. The collection concluded at 2pm.

Rita Malinkiewicz is on Poland’s national team for mountain biking and cyclocross.
