The ceremony concluding the nationwide action “Meals for Heroes during Pandemic” took place on Friday in the Presidential Palace gardens. It was hosted by the First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda.
The campaign aimed at providing aid to veterans began in mid-March this year and lasted 101 days. During that time, 42,000 hot meals were delivered to nearly 350 veterans, as well as their families, carers, and healthcare workers countrywide.
Among the initiators of the action were the Association for the Remembrance of the Home Army, the Mazovian Branch of the Odra-Niemen Association and social workers from the project "Don't Forget About Us, the Warsaw Insurgents", whose representatives received congratulatory letters from the First Lady at the ceremony.
Throughout the action, the organisers also received help from state institutions and numerous private companies.
“It is an example of what the corporate social responsibility is. During the pandemic, I had the opportunity to work with companies from various circles, with entrepreneurs who had their own problems, but did not hesitate to help others”, Ms Kornhauser-Duda said.
The public fundraiser was supported by 6,697 people who donated over PLN 360,000 (EUR 80,600). In turn, more than 100 volunteers from all over the country were in charge of not only distributing meals, but also helping in daily chores, such as doing shopping and buying medicines.
