The German embassy in Warsaw has commemorated the 76th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Rising. The flags above the embassy were lowered to half mast, and the Chargé d'affaires laid a wreath at the monument of the Warsaw Rising.
“As a sign of deep pain and shame caused by the crimes of the German occupier during the fighting with the population of Warsaw during the Warsaw Rising, the German embassy lowered the flags to half of the masts’ height. The Chargé d'affaires of the embassy has laid a wreath at the monument of Warsaw Rising,” the embassy announced on social media.
The uprising began at 5pm (the “W” hour) on August 1, 1944, in an attempt to liberate the city from German hands as the Soviet Army began their offensive in German-occupied territory which is now central-eastern Poland.
