The Ministry of Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation has announced a competition for the naming of new Polish islands which will be created from the excavated material of the Vistula Spit ditch in the Vistula Lagoon and Szczecin Lagoon.
Officially, as a result, the territory of Poland will increase by 600 hectares. One of the islands, in the Szczecin Lagoon, will be constructed in such a way that it will still be able to be expanded.
According to the director of the Maritime Office in Gdynia, Wiesław Piotrzkowski, the new islands will primarily provide shelter for birds. Meadows, full of bird-friendly vegetation will be created on their surface.
Anyone can participate in the competition. A name should be proposed for one of the islands and sent to the e-mail address firstname.lastname@example.org by August 31st. The most interesting and frequently repeated proposals will be selected by the jury for the next stage, which will be a nationwide internet voting. The vote will take place in September.
The winners will receive commemorative engravings stating that they came up with the names of the new islands.
