MMA: Błachowicz to face Reyes over UFC light heavyweight title

Polish mixed martial arts fighter Jan Błachowicz will face Dominick Reyes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight championship bout following the incumbent champion Jon Jones vacating the title, the UFC announced.

Jones forfeited the belt after he decided to move up to the heavyweight class. Błachowicz, current world no. 3 is set to fight against Reyes, the world ranking’s leader on September 26, during the 253rd edition of the UFC gala.

Although the full main card of the event has not yet been published, the fight has already been confirmed. The main event will see Israel Adesanya and Paulo Costa clash for the middleweight champion belt.
Before Błachowicz, no other male MMA fighter from Poland had an opportunity to fight over the champion belt in the largest and the most prestigious MMA promotion company in the world.

Jan Błachowicz made his victorious debut in UFC in October 2014. Since then, he has won 9 and lost 5 times. In his most recent fight in February 2020, he knocked out Corey Anderson throwing a spectacular punch in round 1, for which he was awarded the “Performance of the Night” prize.

In March 2015, Joanna Jędrzejczyk became the first Polish UFC champion, defeating Carla Esparza in the UFC Women’s Strawweight Championship bout. She successfully defended the belt five times until her debacle to Rose Namajunas 2.5 years later.
