Football: Bayern with Lewandowski wins Champions League

Lewandowski did not net in the final but was close to in the first half when he hit a post. The winning goal of the game was scored by French player Kingsley Coman in the 59th minute of the game.

Another Polish player, a goalkeeper Marcin Bułka of PSG, was on the bench in Sunday’s final.

Lewandowski joined the club of Polish players who won the most important European trophy. Zbigniew Boniek, the current head of the Polish Football Association won European Champions Cup in 1985 with Juventus FC, Józef Młynarczyk with FC Porto two years later, Jerzy Dudek was the goalkeeper of FC Liverpool which was victorious in 2005, while Tomasz Kuszczak was on the bench when Manchester United won the UEFA Champions League in 2008.



This was the second Champions League final for Lewandowski. In 2013 he, along with Jakub Błaszczykowski and Łukasz Piszczek were players of Borussia Dortmund, which was defeated in the final by... FC Bayern.

The Polish striker was also the top goalscorer of the 2019/2020 UEFA Champions League. He scored a total of 15 goals. He was the third player in history to be the best scorer in national league, national cup and an European competition. Legendary Dutch Johann Cruyff achieved it in season 1971/1972 and Brazilian striker Mario Jardel in season 1999/2000, but Lewandowski was the first one, who was the only top goalscorer in all of these competitions, because Cruyff and Jardel shared their titles with others.

The final in Lisbon concluded a special Champions League tournament organised in Portugal due to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic.
