Lost wartime painting returns to Poland

Thanks to the efforts of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the twice-looted painting “Gryka” or “Buckwheat Field” by Staniaław Masłowski has returned to Poland. The watercolour was donated to the National Museum in Warsaw.

In May, Masłowski’s painting appeared at an auction at one of Warsaw’s auction houses. It was immediately recognised by the employees of the Department for Restitution of National Property, operating in the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. The owner of the artwork, after learning about its history, decided to return it.

“We are currently working on 80 various works of art - 80 restitution processes are in place,” said Culture and National Heritage Minister, Piotr Gliński.

Over the past 5 years, more than 500 items that have been classified as Polish wartime losses, have been recovered.
