The number of children with severe symptoms of PIMS-TS - a paediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome temporally associated with COVID-19, is increasing constantly. In the last nine days alone, nine such children were admitted to the University Children's Hospital in Krakow.
This information was provided on Tuesday by the spokeswoman for this clinic, Katarzyna Pokorna-Hryniszyn.
"This is the moment to start sounding the alarm" - emphasized Prof. Przemko Kwinta, a paediatrician and neonatologist working at the hospital and added that the condition of the children who are currently in the hospital is serious. They have heart failures and are in imminent life-threatening conditions.
PIMS attacks children of all ages. Those staying at the University Children's Hospital are several-month-old babies, as well as young children and teenagers. The oldest patient is 16 years old.
PIMS-TS is a childhood multi-system inflammatory syndrome associated with SARS-CoV-2. The disease is temporally associated with coronavirus, also asymptomatically. It is an immune reaction of the body which resembles Kawasaki's syndrome.
PIMS-TS is manifested by a high fever lasting at least three days and being impossible to treat with medications. There is ecchymosis in the mouth, red eyes, rash on the hands and feet, then on the rest of the body, weakness, gastrointestinal symptoms, dehydration. The first symptoms resemble Boston Disease.
In the course of this disease, temporally associated with covid, cardiac disorders, including heart failure, are predominant. Changes in the coronary vessels are also found. It is a disease that affects many systems in the child's body that require the simultaneous help of many specialists.
