During an auction that took place at DESA Unicum on December 10, a private collector bought one of Tamara Łempicka’s pieces for nearly EUR 1 mln, which set a new Polish record for a woman’s painting.
Entitled “The Reader” and painted around 1951, it was considered by those who knew Łempicka to be a cryptic self-portrait. The objects located behind the girl accurately reflect the furnishings of the artist’s flat.
Tamara Łempicka is the most expensive Polish artist in history and the third most expensive in the world. Her works are held by such collectors as Madonna, Barbara Streisand and Jack Nicholson.
The record price for one of her paintings was PLN 82 mln amounting to USD 18 mln.
