Dawid Kubacki won the New Year Four Hills Tournament event in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in glittering style, setting a new hill record in the final stage.
The tournament’s champion from 2020 overtook the World Cup leader Halvor Egner Granerud, who was in the lead halfway through. Although the Norwegian could not deny Kubacki’s record-setting 144 metre-long jump, he took the lead in the overall standings of the tournament.
Piotr Żyła made a decent progress and came third, only 0.4 points ahead of another Pole, Kamil Stoch. Karl Geiger, the winner from Oberstdorf, took 5th, leapfrogging nine other athletes in his second attempt.
Friday’s event saw an overall great display from the Polish team, as four jumpers from this nation finished in the top 10 of the competition. Andrzej Stękała confirmed his consistency by taking 10th place, while the fifth Pole in the final, Klemens Murańka, was 22nd.
After two events, Granerud leads the Four Hills Tournament standings on 555 points, only four ahead of Geiger. Stoch is third, while Kubacki is fourth, both of them losing less than 10 points to the leader.
