Another day at the office: Lewandowski with a new record
FC Bayern Munich faced FSV Mainz 05 on Sunday. The champions of Germany began their first match after the winter break in sluggish fashion, 0:2 af half-time. But after the interval, the Bavarians showed the quality that has made them such an irresistible force over the past 12 months.
Mainz hitting the post in the 51st minute, which would have given them a three goal lead, seemed to jerk Bayern into life, as they sprung a counter-attack. Robert Lewandowski set up Joshua Kimmich to half the arrears.
Bayern stepped up a gear and took the lead through goals from Leroy Sane and Nicklas Suele. Then, in the 76th minute, Lewandowski slotted home a penalty following a foul on Gnabry. In the 83rd minute, Thomas Müller received a ball on the right wing and centred for Lewandowski who scored his second with a volley.
Two goals against Mainz were the Pole’s 56th brace in the German league. He broke the record of the legendary Gerd Müller, becoming the first player to score 19 goals in 14 games in the German Bundesliga.Doppelpack Lewandowskiego! ⚽⚽
