Private broadcaster Radio Zet reported that the Ministry of Climate is working to tighten penalties for environmental crimes, including dumping waste outside of designated areas and littering public space. The new regulations will also provide for heavy fines.
Radio Zet reports on its website that if the actions endanger the health of society, the perpetrators may face up to 25 years in prison. On the other hand, for throwing garbage in a field or in a forest, the new regulations provide for 6 months to 8 years imprisonment.
The Climate Ministry, by introducing new regulations and drastically tightening penalties, wants to deter the public from illegal waste disposal and destruction of the natural environment. As noted, illegal disposal of waste is committed not only by citizens, but also by enterprises, which do not want to bear the often high costs of proper disposal of environmentally hazardous materials.
According to the broadcaster, the new regulations will also provide for severe fines. For example, penalties for littering public space and agricultural land are to be increased and amount to PLN 300 to PLN 5,000 (EUR 1,105).
