Polish parliament calls on Russia to release Navalny

The Sejm (lower house) on Thursday passed a resolution calling on Russian authorities to cease the repression of Alexei Navalny and his associates and to release them immediately.

In a resolution, backed by 438 out of 460 MPs, the Sejm condemned steps taken by Russian authorities against Kremlin oppositionists.

Earlier this week, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell stated that the arrest of Mr Navalny was “unacceptable, both to Europe and to the international community” due to the violation of fundamental human rights.

At the same time he pointed out that all decisions regarding the imposition of possible sanctions against Russia by the EU are the responsibility of the European Council.

Alexei Navalny was detained at a Moscow airport after his flight from Berlin on Sunday evening, after being treated in Germany where he ended up in critical condition in August 2020 as a result of poisoning from a nerve agent.
