EC was unprepared for vaccine deliveries negotiations: MEP

Without properly developed administration and lacking experience, the unprepared EC should not have started negotiations with top pharmaceutical companies on vaccine deliveries in the first place, said Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, an MEP and a guest of the Rock Rachon programme.

Various voices call for the resignation of the current European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen, accusing her and EC of trying to grab new competences, namely health, without being ready to handle such an important issue lying outside their expertise.

Jacek Saryusz-Wolski pointed out that the talks took too long which resulted in the delay in vaccine deliveries. Such a task was conferred upon the EU body contrary to the treaty provisions. Mr Saryusz-Wolski believes that the impulse probably came from Angela Merkel who influenced Ms von der Leyen.

Recently, EU lawmakers questioned the European Commission's (EC) president Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday over the shortage and slow rollout of COVID-19 vaccines as she was the one responsible for an export control plan.
