Despite losing in a match against Spain 88:89 in the qualifications to the men’s European basketball championship in Gliwice, southern Poland, the Polish national team won promotion to the tournament that will take place in 2022.

Earlier on Friday, Israel won 79:71 against Romania which secured Poland’s berth in the upcoming European championships yet before the start of the match against Spain.

For most of the game, Poland and Spain went neck and neck, but the latter built a marginal advantage at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth one, Poland equalised and even took the lead, but they eventually gave it away - in the very last second of the match, Spain secured a victory with a free throw.

Nevertheless, the Polish team showed that they are capable of standing up to higher-ranked opponents. Poland’s best scorer was A.J. Slaughter with 27 points under his belt.

The upcoming Eurobasket will take place in September 2022 in four host countries: the Czech Republic, Georgia, Germany and Italy.
