The city of Płock, central Poland, was the location where Sister Faustyna witnessed the remarkable apparitions of Jesus Christ 90 years ago.
“In the evening, when Sister Faustina was in her cell, she saw Jesus dressed in a white robe. One hand was raised in blessing, the other was touching the garment and the chest,” Sister Diana Kuczek said.
“And the Lord Jesus said to her, ‘paint an image according to the drawing you see, with the words Jesus I trust in you’,” Sister Maria Elżbieta Siepak of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy.
Today, this image is known all over the world as the image of Merciful Jesus, who promised: “that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish. I also promise victory over enemies here on earth, especially at the hour of death.”
On the anniversary of the first apparition to Sister Faustina Kowalska, Pope Francis sent special greetings.
“Today my thoughts run to the sanctuary in Płock, Poland, where 90 years ago Jesus appeared to Sister Faustina Kowalska entrusting her with a special message about God’s mercy. And through John Paul II, this message reached the whole world,” Pope Francis said.
Details of this great mission from God for a modest Polish nun can be read in her diary. “It is one of the pearls of world literature and one of the most frequently translated books from Polish into foreign languages. The diary shows us who she was,” Sister Siepak said.
Faustyna Kowalska was a great mystic and Saint.
“This is in a way God’s paradox that Lord Jesus uses a simple noun. Three years of elementary school to remind you that he is merciful,” Father Jarosław Rodzik of the Pallotine Order in Częstochowa said.
“Love and Mercy”, a unique film, tells a unique story. “I wanted the film to be the essence of Sister Faustina’s diary –– a book that changes the lives of people around the world,” said the movie’s director Michał Kondrat.
The diary of Sister Faustina, written in the form of a journal, recalls the last four years of her life. It reveals the depth of her spiritual life and illustrates the high degree of her soul’s union with God.
