Smuggling of nearly EUR 6 mln-worth cigarettes thwarted in Poland

Custom officers claimed one of their biggest victories against smugglers when they recently seized over 1,800,000 illegal cigarettes worth over PLN 27 mln (EUR 5.99 mln).

“It’s the largest smuggling attempt foiled in Polish history. If this stuff had entered circulation, the national treasury would have lost close to PLN 45 million [nearly EUR 10 mln],” said Warrant Officer Maciej Czarnecki of the National Revenue Administration.

The illegal shipment of cigarettes from Belarus to Poland was hidden in two trucks. Officially they were transporting wood and wooden planks. Three Polish citizens were detained. They could face up to 10 years in prison.
