Approval of Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine should be accelerated: PM

“The vaccination process needs to be accelerated,” Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Thursday and called on the European Commission and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to approve the Johnson & Johnson vaccine as soon as possible.

The head of government wrote on Twitter and Facebook that "the effects of vaccination are visible. There are 20 times fewer infections in vaccinated medics."

"Exactly one year has passed since the first case of COVID-19 was recorded in Poland, we need such news. The dedication and hard work of millions of people in Poland and around the world, from scientists, through doctors, to medicine suppliers and nurses administering doses of the vaccine, bring tangible results," he wrote on Facebook.

According to him, "there is only one conclusion - this process must be accelerated for Poland and the EU’s citizens to be protected".

The Prime Minister appealed to the European Commission and the European Medicines Agency to approve the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which has already been approved in the USA, as soon as possible. "No time to waste! Every day counts!" wrote Mr Morawiecki.

So far, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has approved the use of three COVID-19 vaccines. These are vaccines produced by: AstraZeneca / Oxford, BioNtech / Pfizer (Comirnaty) and Moderna. Three more approvals are pending: the American Novavax, as well as Johnson & Johnson (Jannsen) and the German CureVac.
