The best athletes from around Europe will compete for medals at the European Athletics Indoor Championships, the most important event of this part of the 2021 athletics season, which kicked off on Thursday in Toruń, central Poland.
It is the 37th edition of the European Indoor Championships, and the second time the event has been held in Poland. In 1975, the Silesian city of Katowice, southern Poland, was the host. However, this time, fans will not be able to cheer on their favourites due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Two years ago, the Polish team won seven medals in Glasgow, the UK, including five golds.

On the same day, Michał Haratyk will try to defend his shot-put title that he won in Glasgow.

Polish fans might have to wait till Sunday to witness a medal harvest of domestic athletes. Piotr Lisek will challenge the best pole vaulters in the world for a medal, Joanna Jóźwik and Adam Kszczot should put up a decent fight for a podium finish in the women’s and men’s 800 metres race respectively. In turn, both men’s and women’s 4x400 metres relay teams belong to the best in the world and, especially the latter, are among the favourites for gold.
Unfortunately, just before the championships, some of Poland’s medal hopes were dashed, as the shot putter Konrad Bukowiecki broke his toe, while Ewa Swoboda, the gold medalist from Glasgow in the 60 metres race, contracted COVID-19.
All the events will be broadcast by TVP SPORT channel, while the championships will also be available at its website.
