Stefan Kraft from Austria won the ski jumping World Championship event on a large hill in Oberstdorf, Germany, while the best Pole, Piotr Żyła, finished fourth, three points behind the podium.
Robert Johansson from Norway took silver, while host representative Karl Geiger grabbed bronze.
Other Polish athletes did not impress. Dawid Kubacki finished 15th after a short jump in unfavourable wind, Kamil Stoch was only 19th, while Andrzej Stękała took 21st. Friday underperformance of Kubacki and Stoch in particular is alarming, as on Saturday, jumpers will compete in the team competition.
The event was held in inclement weather conditions: randomly blowing wind and heavy snowfall. Even the experienced jumpers, like Ryoyu Kobayashi and Markus Eisenbichler could not land in style and fell after landing.
This was the third gold medal for Stefan Kraft in individual competition at the World Championships. In this respect, he is second to only Adam Małysz, who won four golds.
