US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the administration of President Joe Biden opposes the construction of Nord Stream 2. During hearings in Congress, he said that the gas pipeline threatens the interests of Ukraine and Poland, and did not rule out further sanctions against companies participating in the project.
Antony Blinken answered questions from members of the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs. They argued that the construction of Nord Stream 2 could not be allowed to be completed.
"If we allow the construction of the gas pipeline to be completed, it will be a great victory for Vladimir Putin," argued Republican Congressman Micheal McCaul.
The head of American diplomacy recalled that President Joe Biden is still against the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. “This project is contrary to the principles of energy security in the European Union and threatens the economic and strategic position of Ukraine. Poland’s as well,” said Blinken.
The US Secretary of State recalled that the Biden government imposed sanctions on the Russian ship Fortuna and was analysing the possibility of extending them to other entities.
“Unfortunately, the gas pipeline is 95 percent finished, but we make it clear that we are against its completion,” said Antony Blinken. The head of US diplomacy said that the US is talking about Nord Stream 2 with European allies.
