The No.14 seed doubles pair Iga Świątek and Bethanie Mattek-Sands beat top-seeded Taiwanese Su-Wei Hsieh and Belgium's Elise Mertens 5:7, 6:4, 7:5 in the final round of 16 at the French Open.
The match became a nailbiter and was settled when Świątek and Mattek-Sands managed to break their opponents serve at the last possible moment of the deciding third set.
The Polish star and her American partner will face either Taiwan's Hao-Ching Chan and Latisha Chan (No.6) or Croatia's Darija Jurak and Slovenia's Andreja Klepac (No.11) in the next round.
The second Polish star of the WTA Tour, Magda Linette and her American partner Bernarda Pera also have the chance to advance to the quarterfinals. Their opponents in the next round will be the tenth-seeded pair Lucie Hradecka and Laura Siegemund, from the Czech Republic and Germany respectively
On Saturday, Magda Linette was ejected from the singles competition. Iga Świątek, the reigning champion, will play her singles quarterfinal on Monday against 18-year-old Ukrainian Marta Kostiuk.
Having not lost a single set at Roland Garros for two years, the Polish 20-year-old is the bookmaker’s favorite to win the tournament.
